Missy Elliott drops music video for 'WTF (Where They From)'

Clearly, rapper Missy Elliott can still “Work It.”

The Grammy-winning musician debuted an energetic new song Thursday titled “WTF (Where They From),” complete with a futuristic music video featuring fancy footwork, hoverboards and dancing marionettes of herself and Pharrell Williams.

The seldom-seen Elliott’s new release, which dropped at 9 a.m., marks her first music video in seven years and first solo single in three years.

Her odd yet mesmerizing video opens with a bevy of New Yorkers bopping their heads and singing along to “WTF” before introducing the rapper, who’s decked out in a mirror-encrusted hoodie and glittering silver lipstick.

Dancers spin and strut in intricately choreographed sequences. Uncanny puppet likenesses of Elliott and Williams, who produced the song, dance to the track during an extended sequence. And Elliott shines — both literally and figuratively — in vibrant makeup and innovative costumes.

The 44-year-old Virginia native teased a still image from the music video on her brand-new Instagram account Wednesday.

“I can’t wait for the whole world to see my new video tomorrow,” Elliott dispatched to her followers, who already numbered 112,000 Thursday afternoon. “9am we bout to take off to another planet u ready? LETSGO!”

A 30-second snippet of the catchy “WTF” also surfaced last month in an ESPN promo.

Elliott emerged from her years-long hiatus to steal Katy Perry’s spotlight during this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, joining the pop star onstage to perform a medley of her own beloved hits “Work It,” “Get Ur Freak On” and “Lose Control.”

A premiere date for the hip-hop artist’s seventh studio album, which rapper Timbaland previously told Rolling Stone “sounds today, but the future,” has yet to be announced.
