Nanny who paraded child's severed head in Moscow arrested

A Russian nanny waved a child’s decapitated head around while shouting “I am a terrorist” outside a crowded Moscow subway station Monday, police said.

The woman wearing a black burqa and hijab and later identified by authorities as Uzbekistan national Gyulchekhra Bobokulova got tackled to the ground and arrested at Oktyabrskoye Pole metro station, law enforcement sources told Russian news outlets cited by BBC

“I am a terrorist, I want your death,” the woman could be heard in cellphone video yelling in Russian with the severed head in one hand in front of stunned onlookers. Her strongly accented rant included warnings about the end of the world, criticisms of democracy and cries of the Arabic phrase “Allahu Akbar (God is great)!”

Investigators believe the nanny killed a 3- or 4-year-old girl and set her family’s home on fire in northwestern Moscow. Firefighters discovered the child’s headless body in the burned-out apartment.

The woman will undergo psychatric tests after her “clearly deranged behavior,” according to Moscow’s investigative committee. There were “signs of a violent death” in the apartment and the child’s murder was “monstruous and inexplicable,” Russian federal child welfare commissioner Pavel Astakhov said in a statement posted on the agency’s website

Police said the nanny pulled the child’s head out of her bag when an officer asked to see her documents, Russian news site Lifenews.ru reported. She said she had killed the child and threatened to blow herself up, according to cops.

Russian reporter and eyewitness Polina Nikolskaya recounted the grotesque spectacle.

“She was standing near the metro entrance and caught my attention because she was screaming ‘Allahu Akbar!'” Nikolskaya said. “I saw that she had a bloodied head in her arms, but I thought it was not real. People in the crowd said it was real.”

Immigration officials disclosed the woman was working in Russia illegally. The country is on high alert after a bombing claimed by the Islamic State killed 224 people flying on a Russian passenger jet over Egypt in October.

Investigators believe the woman, who was born in 1977, may have been under the influence of powerful drugs.

“Given the clearly deranged behavior of the detainee, investigators swiftly ordered her to undergo psychiatric tests to establish whether she is capable of understanding the significance of her actions,” Moscow’s investigative committee said in a statement.
