Pope Francis will kick off his U.S. visit with a stop in Washington.

WASHINGTON — President Obama and First Lady Michelle will lead the welcoming committee when Pope Francis arrives in Washington for a historic visit later this month.

The White House says the Obamas will travel to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on Sept. 22 to formally welcome Francis on his first-ever U.S. visit. Francis will meet privately with Obama the next day, becoming just the third Pope to visit the White House.

The Pope’s schedule in Washington includes a midday prayer with bishops at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, and Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
